The Word of the Day comes from "THE COLONY" by Audrey Magee which is longlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize.

A CURRACH is an Irish boat built from a wooden frame. Originally animal skins were used to cover the frame but now canvas takes its place. The design and construction of the Currach is unique to the west coasts of Ireland. It is similar to a coracle or canoe.

The first Currach is believed to have been built some time around the turn of the twentieth century and can be sailed on the open sea and inland waters.
