The shortlist for the 2020 Women's Prize for fiction has been announced and for me there are a couple of surprises. Firstly there are the two that would not come as a surprise to anybody, GIRL, WOMAN, OTHER, and THE MIRROR & THE LIGHT, and it is highly likely that one of these will take out the prize.
Then there are the two that come as a bit of a surprize to me. I read and enjoyed DOMINICANA, but is it shortlist worthy. I have not read WEATHER yet, but it has received very mixed reviews from readers and literary circles.
Finally the two books that I am thrilled to have made it. A THOUSAND SHIPS and HAMNET. I am an Iliad fanatic and I thought A THOUSAND SHIPS was quite brilliant and Natalie Haynes has done an amazing job giving voice to the women from not just Homer's epic poem but the whole Trojan war. However I would be lying if I did not say that I truly hope HAMNET wins. I have only just started reading it, only about twenty percent into it, and I know that it is going to be one of my favourite books. The writing is simply sublime.
