The 2021 Tournament of Books quarterfinals have begun and "DEACON KING KONG" by James McBride has made it through defeating "MEMORIAL" by Bryan Washington. McBride's book is phenomenal and it and PIRANESI are my favorites to take the rooster.
The judge for this match was Sean Hooks.
Sean Hooks is originally from working-class New Jersey, about 10 miles west of New York City, and currently lives on the Westside of Los Angeles, near LAX. He holds a BA (liberal arts) from Drew University, an MFA (fiction) from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and an MA (English) from Loyola Marymount University. His stories, essays, articles, and reviews have appeared in a variety of publications. Known connections to this year’s contenders: “None.”
