Indian Parliament opens to rioting

Jan 10, 1921

The Duke of Connaught arrives in India.

The Duke of Connaught landed at Madras today at the start of his visit to India, during which he will inaugurate the Chamber of Princes and the Council of State and Imperial Legislative Assembly in Delhi. Unfortunately the Duke's visit is taking place against a background of rioting.

Mr Gandhi, the nationalist leader who now controls the Congress party, has sworn not to cooperate with "this satanic government" and his campaign for independence is turning to violence with mobs looting bazaars, attacking road convoys and burning landlords' homes and crops.
