Well the ABIA winners have been announced and let me say that I am over the moon that BOY SWALLOWS UNIVERSE by Trent Dalton won the book of the year. I read it when it was published, I have a review on this site and apart from the slight disappointment at the ending I thought it was quite a brilliant book.
Trent Dalton has won many awards in many different fields but this is his debut novel and it's a great debut. If you are looking for some great Aussie lit than give it a whirl.
It also won the Audio book of the year and was read by Stig Wemyss.
It also took out Literary Book of the year and although I would have loved to have seen Winton get the award for THE SHEPARD'S HUT. I am still thrilled for this novel to scoop yet another award.
It also won the MATT RICHELL AWARD FOR NEW WRITER OF THE YEAR.
The General Non Fiction Book of the Year was won by NO FRIEND BUT THE MOUNTAINS by Behrouz Boochani which I have just added to my tbr after reading some very positive reviews. Here's the blurb -
Where have I come from? From the land of rivers, the land of waterfalls, the land of ancient chants, the land of mountains...
In 2013, Kurdish journalist Behrouz Boochani was illegally detained on Manus Island. He has been there ever since.
People would run to the mountains to escape the warplanes and found asylum within their chestnut forests...
This book is the result. Laboriously tapped out on a mobile phone and translated from the Farsi. It is a voice of witness, an act of survival. A lyric first-hand account. A cry of resistance. A vivid portrait through five years of incarceration and exile.
Do Kurds have any friends other than the mountains?
I think that this is going to be a terrific read.
The INTERNATIONAL BOOK OF THE YEAR went to LESS by Andrew Sean Greer. This is another book which has been on my radar and I have been humming and ruminating over. Now that it has won this award I may just have to give it a go. It's hard to get a take on this one because reviews have ranged from two to five stars and this is from many reviewers I hold in very high regard.
Well they are the three main categories that I follow with the ABIA awards. All over now until next year.
